Why Finland And Denmark Are Happier Than The U.S.

I'd like to talk about happiness today.

Finland was voted the happiest country in the world.

Denmark comes in at No. 2, followed by Iceland at No. 3. Sweden and Norway are seventh and eighth, respectively.

I wonder why Finland is happier than the USA and Korea. 

And what makes a happy country?

Q1. Do you have children? If not, do you want children?

In your opinion, does South Korea have a good social welfare system that supports new parents and their newborns, e.g. providing a Baby Box or national statutory parental leave?

I think Korea doesn’t have a good babysitting system nor is it available to everyone.

Two baby boxes are not enough. The daycare staff may be verbally and physically abusive to the babies. 

It’s hard to replace people at work if they do take parental leave.

Q2. “Another determinant is one’s sense of personal freedom in making important life choices.” How have you been able to figure out what you want to do in life? Has the government helped in any way to achieve that?

In my case, I’ve been able to figure out my experiences.

I’m trying to learn from my past mistakes and I am eager to learn new things.

There are some systems for helping people who are concerned about their career in Korea.

Before I started working at my current workplace, I received unemployment benefits for only 2 months while I was looking for a job.

Q3. Nordic people are taxed higher than Americans but the Nordic people are more likely to believe that their government provides them with great services and covers the majority of their basic needs. Are you satisfied overall with paying taxes in Korea? Is the general public trusting or antagonistic toward the government?

It's really hard to satisfy everyone. I think politics is a gray area.

If people aren’t worried about their house, job and the necessities of life, they would feel happy.

So, the government should try to be satisfied with people's welfare and benefits.
